The story behind Easy Price Pro

Way back in the mists of time (1982 to be exact) Mr Betts was frustrated in having to laboriously price up building work day in day out, this was not only time consuming but also very tedious. Because estimating for a new house or an alteration took such a long time, mistakes would be inevitable.

How it all began

After purchasing his first computer, Mr Betts looked everywhere to find some software that might help him with the awful task of pricing works. Having previously wasted several thousand pounds on two very expensive specialised building accounts programs (not to mention costly staff training days for company staff and himself) which were very poor and just result in reams and reams of statistical printouts, Mr Betts was determined to thoroughly research building estimating software. Ultimately, all the programs he tried were useless as they were not good enough for the building trade. With frustration riding at an all-time high, Mr Betts thought he might as well have a try at making his own program, suited to his own exact requirements. At first, it was a simple list of works like foundations, ground floor and walls etc, which then expanded into a broken down list of all the elements which comprised these sections of work. This in itself was simple but so very useful as it gave him a check list to follow and would not allow him to miss items of work, although he still had to measure and work out all the items required and then add them up at the end.

The Foundation of something great

It was not long before Mr Betts found that these numbers could be simply added by the computer itself, not only this but there are many elements of work that could be processed by the computer to help with other works. For example, if you excavated a foundation, not only would you see the labour time, excavator hire and amount of soil to remove, but you would have the concrete to go into the foundation. This sounds very simple and obvious but this revelation was a real turning point for the program's development. The process of pricing up a job was now getting far quicker compared to doing it the old fashioned way with pencil and paper and as the computer was performing many of the calculations the number of manual errors were greatly reduced. Copies of the estimate could then be printed out and given to his staff in a clearly understandable format.
